It takes the same
qualities of
patience,
consistency and
respect to be an
effective school
administrator and an
effective referee.
Nate Jones
has a fair share of
all of the above.
That is why
he is only the
second official
nominated by the
Oregon Athletic
Officials
Association for
membership in the
Oregon Sports Hall
of fame.
Jones is well-known
for his long
officiating career.
It started in
the days of the
PAC-8 in both
football and
basketball.
Six years
later, the NFL
beckoned and Nate
traveled on fall
weekends for 22
years, many as part
of the leagues
number one crew with
the legendary Jim
Tunney.
He saw the
transition to video
replay and served
three more seasons
in the booth as a
replay official.
A graduate of Lewis
and Clark with a
master’s degree from
Portland State
University, Nate
Jones is also a
long-time educator
within Portland
Public Schools.
He has served
as teacher, coach,
vice-principal and
principal at
Roosevelt,
Washington, Monroe,
Marshall, Jefferson
and Franklin High
Schools.
Jones also
has served as the
District’s
Director of
Alternative
Education.
Nate is active in
the community beyond
the classroom and
the playing field,
serving on boards of
Oregon Ballet
Theatre, Portland
Opera and the Oregon
Sports Hall of Fame.
Nate Jones was
inducted into the
Oregon Sports Hall
of Fame in 2010.
