Oregon State
standout Ted Bates
was selected for two
All-American first
teams. He played in
the 1957 Rose Bowl,
the 1958 East-West
Shrine games, and
the Hula Bowl, and
was named to the
All-Coast team.
Drafted by the
Cardinals in 1959,
Bates played for
them in Chicago and
St. Louis through
1963. He ended his
professional career
as a Washington
Redskin. He received
the 1958 Hayward
Award as Oregon’s
outstanding amateur
athlete.
